  • I’m new here. Could you tell me a little about what this site is all about?

Of course! First of all, though, here’s a warm welcome, and a happy grin that you’ve been called here. Thanks to the gift of your presence, Gaia has just gotten a little more wonderful. :)

But what is Gaia? Gaia is an online community of people who understand the connection between personal and planetary well-being, who believe in the power of positive intentions to making a difference in the world, and who are committed to living with authenticity. There’s plenty to see and do—as you’ll come to find out.

Our members use Gaia in different ways. When you join, you’ll be able to:
    • Spend time in our Groups section and take part in rich discussions on everything from struggles of spiritual integrity, to integral metaphysics, to poetry and creative writing.
    • Keep a personal journal or blog, to share and find support from other remarkable souls.
    • Try our Questions and Reflections, daily prompts that encourage members to self-inquiry and expression.
    • Explore the quote section and discover wisdom contributed by others and adding favorite quotations to their personal library.
    • Peruse the media areas for books and films to inspire them. Some use our conscious business section to discover companies that care. Some convene local “Gaia Gatherings” to connect in real life.
    • Visit for a reminder that there are others like us in the world—others who believe in the potential latent in everyone, and who can see a brilliant future for all of us if we can support each other in realizing our true selves.
How you use the site is really up to you! All that matters is that you come with a positive intention and a commitment to seeing what is best in others and in yourself. We don’t think it’s hard to imagine what a difference this small pledge can make. :)

  • Goodness. I’m definitely interested. How do I join?

    It’s simple.
    • Just visit the Apply page,
    • fill out the fields,
    • and press the Apply button. We’ll pop you an email when your application has been approved. :)
    • You’ll need to click the confirmation link, and when you do, you’ll be able to get started on your Gaia Profile.
If you don’t receive a confirmation email (which will either approve your application or ask for more information!) email after a day or so, check your spam box—sometimes our first notes end up routed to the wrong areas. And if you can’t find it there, don’t hesitate to contact support. We’re happy to help hunt down any web-gremlins that might have interfered.

  • Okay! I’ve just joined, and I’m ready to begin. How do I get started?

Congratulations, and a warm welcome, again. We’re thrilled you’re here.

That said, getting set up is easy! Let’s go ahead and create your profile first. (You can get to your profile by clicking the ‘Me’ tab in the left sidebar, and then clicking the Profile Page link.)

    Creating your Profile

There are two ways to create your profile.
    • Edit on your profile page by clicking the little people icons on the right-hand side,
    • Or use the ‘Update’ link in your sidebar. Let’s start with the 'Update' link.
    Go ahead and click it.

You should see a few fields asking for your Nickname, your First Name, your Last name, and your Title, as well as your gender and birthday, so let’s go ahead and fill those in. (We recommend sticking with the name you choose, as it’s hard to keep track of friends who keep changing what they want to be called!) Have fun with your title, too! Try picking a phrase that delights you, such as “Philosopher of Beauty” or “Warrior of Peace” or “Spirited Artist,” and that will give others a glimpse into who you are.
    • Below that is the “About yourself…” section. Here you can share as much or as little of yourself as you wish. You might use it to describe your authentic self—or the person who you strive to become—so that it might serve as a reminder for you on your path. You might want to share a bit about what you love, or your greatest ambitions, so others can support you in following your heart. Be creative.

(You might notice others have pasted images or videos or other embedded media in their profiles. While self-expression is wonderful, do keep in mind that not every browser supports rich media, and that sometimes a few simple words can say more than page of pictures. :)

    • Next, you can make it easier for neighborly Gaians to find you by sharing your location. Just enter your city or zip code in the appropriate field. You can also just choose to show your country.
    • Last but not least, it’s time to let others know what you love! We’ve included a few boxes in which you can fill your interests (your passions, hobbies, favorite topics of conversation, or anything else that calls your attention), heroes (be they famous luminaries like Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr., or personal beacons such as your parents or best friend), your teachers (from your childhood or today), and the books, movies, and music you love most.

Don’t worry about perfection here; what’s important is that you capture a few favorites! It helps other Gaians who share your loves to find you, and also lets you recommend the authors or movies that have made a difference in your life to others.
Okay! We’re done. Just hit update, and voila! Your Gaia Profile is complete.

    Adding an icon.

The next important step is to find a photo or image to represent you on the site.
    • Go ahead and look on your computer for a picture you’d like to share. (Some people prefer to use animals, a piece of artwork they’ve made, or soothing images of landscapes or nature.)
    • Then click on the ‘Photos’ link under the ‘Me’ tab in your sidebar. On the right of the screen you’ll see a ‘Photo Management’ box. Click ‘Upload Photo.’
    • Add the file you’d like to post, and, if you wish, a title and description. Then click the ‘Upload Photo’ button.
If you’d like, you can add more photos to your gallery by following the same steps. It’s a wonderful way to help others on the site get to know a bit more about you.

When you’re done adding pictures, click the “Make My Icon” button under the photo you’d like to use to represent you. Voila! You should see the image appear in the ‘Me’ tab of your sidebar.

  • Now that I’ve created my profile, what can I do?

Congratulations! You’re now a full-fledged Gaian. Still, you might be feeling a little uncertain about what’s next. (Gaia is a wonderfully friendly and supportive place, but we know what it’s like to be new. :) Remember those "Choose your own Adventure" books? Let’s try that here.

Do you want to: [return to top]

  • I'd like to make some friends on the site

CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF THIS ITEM

This is an excellent way to start; after all, our members are the most important part of Gaia! There are many ways to meet others, but the simplest is by using the ‘Members’ link in the ‘Gaia’ tab of your sidebar.

Clicking it will take you to a page where you can search through all those who’ve joined our community.

You can search: Nicknames, Real Names, Titles, Locations, Biographies, Interests, Heroes, Teachers, Books, Movies, or Music. If you’d like, you can narrow the results by selecting age and gender.

You can also chose how you’d like the results sorted: by Last Login, Latest Blog Entry, Sign Up, the number of friends, or alphabetically by nickname.

Put in one of the interests or causes or writers you’re most deeply passionate about, and see who shows up!

Once you’ve found someone whose profile resonates, just drop them a note using the “Invite as Friend” link in the sidebar tab associated with their name. Clicking it will open up a message from you to them; all they’ll need to do is click “Accept Invitation” and Woohoo! You’ve made your first friend.

Another way to get meet others is by browsing through the recent activity section. Page through some of the newer journal entries, or see what discussions move you! You can always leave a supportive comment on an entry, or send them an invitation letting them know you liked a point they’d made. Or, start with the Questions and Reflections. Even if you don’t want to post your own answer, you can leave a quick comment on someone else’s response. :)

Finally, you can invite friends from outside Gaia to come join you! Just click the ‘Invite’ link under the ‘Friends’ section in your ‘Me’ sidebar.

No doubt you’ve noticed some of the wonderful conversations occurring within our Groups, and are eager to contribute. Here, again, getting started is easy.

    • When you’ve found the Group you want to join, just click the “Join this Group” button under the Group’s icon in the sidebar.

  • I’ve got plenty to share, and would love to get started on my journal.

CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF THIS ITEM

    • When you’re done, think of a few tags to help others find the post.
We recommend starting out with a hello and a bit of an introduction. What are you impressions of the community? What did you feel when you first found us? What would you like others to know about you?

You also might try set your intention by sharing a bit about your goals and dreams and hopes for the weeks and months ahead. What called you to Gaia? What do you hope for from your connections here? What were you looking for when you found the site?

CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF THIS ITEM

You’re not alone! Many of our members start their day by answering these prompts.

  • General FAQs

    Group FAQ

  • How do the groups work?

The Groups are little ‘mini-communities’ within Gaia. Each Group is organized around a particular, more focused topic.

Our Groups can be broken into a few categories. On our main Groups page, you’ll see our ‘Official’ Gaia Groups—Groups moderated by members of the Team and to which every member belongs. These include the Lounge, the Support areas, Gaia Community Vision, and our Questions and Reflections Group. You’ll see the Community Service Groups—member-created Groups that, while not official, are geared toward the Community itself. And then you’ll find the rest: an abundance of member-created Groups on virtually any topic you can imagine. :)

As you’ll see, the majority of the Groups on Gaia fall into this member-created category. You can easily see who ‘Cultivated’ (started) a Group, and who the other moderators are, by clicking the ‘Active Members’ tab in the accordion widget on the right-hand side of the Group’s main page.

Any member (including you!) can ‘cultivate’ up to three Groups; however, given the dedication of time and energy it takes to grow and moderate a Group, and the number that are already in existence, we do try to encourage newcomers to search for and join existing Groups before starting their own.

  • What is the difference between Public, Private, and Request In Groups?

CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF THIS ITEM

    Really, not that much:
    • Most of the Groups on Gaia are Public Groups, meaning anyone can read the posts, and any member of Gaia can join in.
    • We also give members the option of creating Private Groups. These are meant for those who want a Group with a little more privacy, either because of the sensitive nature of the topic or because they’d prefer a smaller Group with only a few members.
    • Lastly, there are Request-In Groups. The conversations in these Groups can be read by anyone, but to join, members must be invited by a moderator. (You’ll find most are only too happy to welcome another participant, so if you see a Request-In Group that interests you, don’t hesitate to let one of the moderators know! You’ll usually find a list in the ‘About this Group’ widget.)

  • How can I join a Group?

CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF THIS ITEM

Once you’ve found a Group that catches your eye (you can either search the Group titles and descriptions, or just browse through the discussions), you can click the ‘Join’ button in Group sidebar. Voila—you’re in!

  • How do I post to a Group?

CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF THIS ITEM

You can post a new thread (a great idea if you’d like to introduce yourself) by entering a Room and clicking the “New Thread” link.

Or, you can add to an existing thread by mousing over the ‘Reply’ at the bottom of a post. There, you have the option of replying either to the post itself, or the thread as a whole. (If you reply to the post your response will end up nested beneath that entry; replying to the thread as a whole, in contrast, is better for when you’re addressing the post that started the ‘conversation.’)

  • How do I add links to a post?

To add a link to your posts, highlight the text that you'd like to make into a link. Then click the little chain icon above the text box. A pop up will appear. Paste in the URL to which you'd like the text to link, and click "Okay." (To remove the link, just highlight the text again, and again click the chain icon.)

  • How do I add images to a post?

Below the text box where you compose your post, you'll see two grey boxes. The first says: "Attach images." Clicking the 'Browse' button within that box will allow you to add any image saved to your computer. You can also choose to add the image to your gallery, which you can find by clicking the 'Photos / Greetings' link in your sidebar.

To add more than one image, just click the 'Add More' link.

  • How to I add videos to a post?

To add videos to a discussion post, just paste in the URL of the video you'd like to include. (Note: Gaia currently only supports YouTube and Google videos.)

  • What’s the best way to follow discussions?

CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF THIS ITEM

    There are plenty of options!
    • From any page within a Group, you can catch up on what’s been happening using the “Recent Discussions” link in the Group sidebar. You can also use the “Group Activity” tab in the right-hand widget to see new members, comments, and posts to the Grapevine.
    • Inside each Room in a Group, you can order the Threads by “Thread Started,” “Replies”, and “Last Post” by clicking the appropriate links.
    • Then, inside each Thread, you can organize the entries using the ‘Threaded’ and ‘Unthreaded’ links (‘threaded’ discussions are those where you can see nested responses; ‘unthreaded’ discussions just post the replies in the order that they were made). You can also use the ‘Newest First’ option to bring the most recent posts to the top of the page.
    • Lastly, you can add a Group to your ‘Subscriptions’ by clicking the ‘Subscription Settings’ link. Here, you’ll be able to select whether (and how often!) you’d like to be notified by email of new posts and entries. We recommend the ‘Daily Digest’ version if you don’t want to get overwhelmed, but moderators may wish to be alerted to individual posts.
Play around! Everyone has their own personal preferences when it comes to discussion threads and forums. We’re sure you’ll have no trouble getting comfy.

    • Inside the Rooms, you can add a few threads to get the conversations started (just click the “New Thread” link), and the, when you’re done…
    • Go ahead and invite members by clicking the “Manage Members” link in your sidebar, and then clicking the “Invite Members” button. From there, you can either invite Gaia Community members, or those who haven’t yet joined.

(Note: If your Group is public, you can also just send people the link with instructions to click the “Join this Group” button. Easy peasy. :)

  • Q&R FAQ

  • Tell me about the Questions and Reflections! How do they work? How can I get started?

CLICK HERE TO SEE A VIDEO DEMONSTRATION OF THIS ITEM

The Questions and Reflections are our daily inquiries.
    • Just go to the Questions and Reflections page and click ‘Post Your Answer.’ Your journal will open a new entry with the daily Question in the title and appropriate tags. Write as much as you like! It can be short and sweet or long and analytical—what’s most important is that it reflects you.
    • It’s also fun to read the responses written by other members. Once yours is written it will show up on the Questions and Reflections page with the other entries in a beautiful collection of thoughts.

  • What if I want to suggest a question for the Q&R?

You have two options. If you want to post it immediately, just pop over to the Q&R Group and ask it yourself! Otherwise, just pop Siona a message with your recommendation. She’d love to hear. :)
